Is February a good time to visit Mexico?

February is an idyllic, warm and sunny month to visit the coastal plains of Mexico, though it may be cold inland at high altitude. While the rest of North America is in the grip of winter, down south in Mexico – along the Caribbean, Gulf and Pacific Coasts, the weather is  sunny, and there is little chance of rain.

It could well snow on the high interior plateau in Mexico in February, but those who head for the coastal resorts will find pleasant, mild conditions with no precipitation to speak of. February is one of the coolest months in Mexico, with an average annual temperature of 15°C (59°F), but this is for the entire country, and on the Mayan Riviera, for example, Cancun offers a maximum of 28°C (84°F); on the Pacific Coast  Salina Cruz, in the Oaxaca, has a maximum average of 27.13°C (80.8°F) for the month.  Add to this sunny weather the fact that this is the height of the dry season throughout Mexico, with only a negligible amount of rain recorded, this makes February a great month for a holiday in Mexico.

Have a whale of a time of of Baja California in Mexico in February watching grey whales mate and breed as they gather off of the coast – Lopez Mateos and Guerrero Negro turn the occasion into a festival during the first week of February.

International tennis stars head for Acapulco in February for the Mexican Tennis Open, and Mexico City’s China Town explodes into frolics for the Chinese New Year celebrations at the start of the month.

The first Monday in February is a public holiday throughout Mexico to mark Constitution Day.

What to pack

If you’re coming to Mexico in February for the beach, bring your swimsuit and shorts, but top off your packing with a jacket and sweater for cool evenings. Inland you will need warmer clothing – and perhaps even an overcoat in Mexico City. Wherever you go in Mexico in February sunglasses, sunhat and sun-screen are vital accessories.
