Is March a good time to visit Spain?

If you’re itching for the sunshine after a dreary UK or northern European winter, head for southern Spain in March. Spring arrives with a flourish of warm sunshine and relatively dry weather. While far from the heat of high summer, the advantages of a March holiday in Spain are enjoying all that the country has to offer without the crowds of summer holiday-makers, and there are plenty of special offers on accommodation to be had, especially in early March, on the Costa del Sol in particular. The weather in Madrid remains cool and cloudy, and in the north winter sports are still on offer.

Temperatures move up a few degrees during March across the country as Spain emerges from its chilly winter – especially on the Mediterranean coast where the mercury creeps up towards the 20°C mark over the course of the month in most places. The Mediterranean coast also experiences dry weather during this period – although nothing can be guaranteed at any time of year. Northern and north-west Spain remains soggy and cool during March.

What’s on in Spain in March

As spring marches in, Spain celebrates one of its most vibrant and popular annual festivals – Las Fallas – in the middle of March in Valencia. Papier mache effigies of celebrities are paraded through the streets and burnt on bonfires amid much revelry and partying. Mini-Fallas festivals are also held in other towns in Spain – including the popular holiday resort of Benidorm.

What to pack for a holiday in Spain in March                         

In Andalucia there is the chance of some sun-bathing, so pack a swimsuit and shorts in the hope of some very warm days. Generally, though, sundresses may need to be topped off with a cardigan, and a raincoat would probably be useful. In central, northern and north-western Spain in March you will definitely need an umbrella, a few warm jumpers to top off the T-shirt, and a windcheater or warm jacket.
