Weather in Tenerife in September

Is September a good time to visit Tenerife?

As the leaves begin to turn in Europe to the north, in Tenerife – the island of “eternal spring” – summer, rather than spring, lingers on with hot days and warm nights, particularly on the south-west coast. The visitors with schools and jobs to return to in the UK and Europe at the end of the summer holiday period wend their way homewards, but now is the perfect time for those less encumbered by enforced breaks to enjoy the perfect weather of Tenerife, without the sweaty crowds of high summer.

Climate in Tenerife in September

Tenerife is a small island, but it has three very different climates dictated by the topography. On the south-west coast where most of the popular beach resorts are concentrated, it remains warm to hot and pleasant all year round. In September the beaches are washed by warm azure seas averaging 23°C, and the air temperature is a comfortable 25°C by day, seldom dipping below 17°C at night. Sunshine is the order of nearly every day here, but with the “rainy” winter season closing in there could be a few days in the month with some cloud cover and light precipitation. The second climatic zone is to the north-east of the island, encompassing the capital, Santa Cruz, where it is slightly wetter and cooler, but still good enough to procure a sun tan. Last, but by no means least, is the very cool high-altitude climate on the slopes of the interior mountains – particularly the dormant Mount Teide volcano – where it can be windy and chilly with temperatures of around 9°C at the summit during September.

What’s on in Tenerife in September

Tenerife is a land of never-ending festivals, and there are several in September to draw visitors in to the joie de vivre of the islanders, and complement the entertainment offered by the resorts. During the first week of September is the Festival of Socorro in Guimar, and in Los Silos a bright festival dubbed “Virgin of the Lights”. Mid-month the Festival of Jesus Christ in La Laguna is particularly enjoyed by young people, topped off with a splendid fireworks display.

What to pack for a holiday in Tenerife in September

For day wear bring your swimsuit, shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops, but in the evenings outdoors you may want to top off your party-wear with a cardigan or light jacket. If you plan to take the cable car up Mount Teide bring along a padded jacket and in the north of the island, a raincoat may see some use.
